**Within the past 2 seasons I have had the pleasure to introduce Julia Habecker-Green to the sport of diving where she has met all expectations in the sport. She also coaches an area High School team for which all divers qualified for their districts championship in a matter of short time.. Not only did Julia gain role of Assistant coach but is also our strength and conditioning coach by trade. I am delighted that she has joined us as we continue to grow as a team. I have included her bio below.
Julia Habecker-Green earned a Bachelor's Degree from Cornell University in 1989, double majoring in Biology and Education. She earned a Master's Degree in Human Genetics from the University of Michigan in 1991, specializing in Teratology. She worked as a Genetic Counselor at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts from 1993 to 2003. Julia's daughters were born in 1991 and 1996, and her son in 2003; and she left Genetic Counseling in 2003 to homeschool her children. Since 2003, she has worked as a laboratory Genetic Counselor at Genzyme Genetics in Framingham, Massachusetts, as a Middle School Science teacher at Heritage Academy in Longmeadow, Massachusetts, and as a substitute teacher in Fiskdale, Massachusetts. She also currently runs a crafting business through ETSY called Wayward Hen Designs; she specializes in photo quilts and pysanky.
Julia started coaching at age 11 -- her father was a Physical Education teacher and ran the town soccer league, so she got recruited early. She has coached soccer most years since then, in both town and competitive travel leagues. During her high school years, she competed in soccer, gymnastics, track, and softball, and worked summers coaching at an All Sports camp and refereeing soccer. While at Cornell, she continued to play and referee soccer, and she began coaching gymnastics for the Ithaca Gymnastics Club. She continued to play soccer until 2005, when aging joints became too much of a problem! Julia started coaching Men's Junior Olympic and Men's Elite gymnastics in 2009 at All American Gymnastics Academy in Wilbraham, Massachusetts. Her son, Jonah, had wanted to be a gymnast so badly, he had spent the summer working with the girls' team at All American, so Julia stepped up and started a boys' team. Julia continued to coach the boys' team at Giguere's Gymnastics in Worcester, Massachusetts from 2012 to 2016, and used educational opportunities provided by Giguere's to learn more about strength and mobility for esthetic sports.
In 2016, Julia's son was required to leave gymnastics due to a chronic wrist injury, so Julia had him try diving with coach Wil at CMD. By winter of that year, he wanted to compete in diving for his high school, but there was neither a team nor a coach. Coach Wil, kindly, helped Julia transition her gymnastics knowledge to a new sport for her -- diving. Julia has coached diving at Tantasqua Regional High School for 2 years now, with all of her divers qualifying to the local championship both years. She is also happy to help Coach Wil as his Central Mass team continues to grow and develop.
